The flurry of transfer activity... Will it happen?

By Chris Parry
Thursday, 29th July 2010
As ever, Arsene Wenger is leaving it late to get new players in before the transfer window closes, but according to the mostly-unreliable media there are no shortage of contenders.
On the goalkeeping front we have Marchetti, Schwarzer, and Stekelenburg - all tipped in the last week to be targets... oh and of course the Russian shot stopper Akinfeev, who'd "love to join up with his fellow countryman Andrei Arshavin" according to his agent - give me strength.

Sol's departure to Newcastle leaves us short of an experienced centre back albeit Per Mertesacker has been mentioned as a replacement, however the wildly conflicting quotes from Arsene Wenger offer no clues as to his thinking.

I have to say that my natural tendency is to fall in dutifully with the "In Arsene we trust" brigade, but one wonders as to what his real feelings are regarding the team when one hears such opposing quotes from the man.

I suspect that this season will be his final attempt to win silverware without spending significant sums of money on players, and I also suspect that if we finish the season potless this time he'll ride of into the sunset no doubt convinced that the plan worked.

We shall see.
